Self-propelled pallet stackers have presented a lot of advantages over conventional forklifts. Regardless of its simple design and mechanism, a self-propelled pallet stacker proves to be durable and efficient in any industrial setting.

What are Self-Propelled Stackers?

These heavy duty equipments are a good alternative to conventional forklifts. The stackers mainly function to lift and transport heavy pallets and other merchandise from one location to another. These are more economical and environmentally friendly compared to powered stackers. Self-propelled stackers are very efficient and can position loads up to 12 feet high. The propulsive force is generated by a power drive wheel and power unit running through electrical or mechanical means. This means that manual assistance is no longer needed in order to move the stacker or lift the weight. All power sources should also be supported just in case initial drive fails.

Features

Self-propelled pallet stackers basically function the same way as forklift trucks although they might not be as large, as expensive or able to lift as much weight. A typical model can lift and transport loads weighing anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 pounds. The stackers come with the standard forks or tines where loads are placed. These are usually made of steel with polyurethane wheels. At the operator's area you will find a control panel with levers and buttons to raise or lower loads, move the stacker back and forth as well as brakes at the handle of heavy duty models. Most stackers also have a turning radius of around 5 feet.

The legs and forks of the stacker can be adjusted to properly suit different pallet sizes for ultimate stability. There may be stabilization legs that can be adjusted accordingly. A counterweight system replaces stabilization legs in other occasions. The vehicle can move up to a top speed of 5 miles per hour although operators are advised to drive at a slower rate. Take note that self-propelled stackers can run into stacks or over people if not driven carefully.

Training

Just like any other heavy duty equipment, drivers and operators should first be certified to handle the stacker. Training should cover all details regarding the type of equipment and loads to be used to ensure safety and efficiency. There are several hazards and dangers posed by these vehicles such as poor visibility when loaded, overloading and counterweight issues. Self-propelled pallet stackers should still follow the same safety rules and guidelines in the workplace. These should also be regularly maintained and checked for damage.
